Delta 37-315 8-Inch Jointer
The 37-315 is Delta's 8 in long-bed jointer, not a 6 in one, and that's good news for anyone buying it. It joined the Delta line after the Crescent plant in Ohio closed in 1952, and owners date theirs from the early 1950s into the 1980s. It faces boards up to 8-1/16 in wide on a 5-1/2 ft bed, with a 4 x 34 in center-mounted fence and a three-knife head. Delta sold it bare or on a cast-iron or enclosed steel stand, with single- or three-phase motors, and a complete single-phase package shipped at 506 lb in 1961. The knives and the whole cutterhead were shared across Delta's 8 in jointers, and Walker-Turner's 1958 8 in jointer used the same part numbers. Get a complete 37-315 and you won't outgrow it.

Power, iron, fence and freight
- Power and phase
- Delta's 1961 catalog offered the 37-315 with a 1 HP single-phase motor at 115/230 V or a 1 HP three-phase motor with a manual starter, and the 1984 manual covers 1 and 1-1/2 HP motors in both. In the photos, the motor plate gives phase and horsepower. A three-phase jointer needs a VFD or a phase converter on house power.
- Motor and bearings
- The cutterhead runs on ball bearings that Delta's manual says need special tools to remove and replace. Ask for a video of the head running. It should hum steadily with no rumble or knock.
- Table and rust
- The tables are cast iron and 5-1/2 ft long together. To check them, lay a straightedge on the outfeed table reaching at least 2 ft over the infeed and slide feeler gauges into any gap. Ask the seller to do it, or do it on arrival.
- Fence, guards and gauges
- The center-mounted fence is 4 x 34 in and tilts both ways. The bare 37-315 came with the knives, the fence, the arbor pulley and the cutterhead guard, but no stand or motor. Check the photos for the guard and fence.
- Trunnions and adjustments
- Delta changed the jointer at serial EX-3690, around 1972, and kept separate parts lists for the old and new styles. Ask the seller to raise and lower both tables on video. They should move smoothly and lock.
- Blades and knives
- It takes a set of three 8 in high-speed steel knives, Delta No. 37-308, and Delta's 37-810 cutterhead fits all its 8 in jointers. 8 in jointer knives are still sold. The cutterhead has knife-lifter springs and an index stop for setting them.
- Dating it
- Use Delta's serial tables on VintageMachinery.org. Numeric serials like 1279864 are Bellefontaine numbers (that one is 1960), and two-letter prefixes are Tupelo (DS is 1967, DZ 1968, EZ and FG 1972). The style change at EX-3690 splits the old and new jointers.
- Moving it
- The bare jointer shipped at 270 lb in 1961 and 416 lb on its cast-iron stand. Lift the jointer off the stand and move them separately, and strap the tables so they can't slide.
- Safety upgrades
- Make sure the spring-loaded cutterhead guard is there and swings back over the head. Use push blocks for every pass.

What to check
Cutterhead bearings need special tools to replace, and tables can sag out of parallel if the ways are worn. Missing guards and fences are the parts to price in.

- 05Running: Ask for a video of it running. The head should hum steadily without a knock.
- 06Motor plate: Ask for a photo of the motor plate. You want the phase your shop has.
- 07Serial: Ask for a photo of the serial. It tells you the year and whether it's before or after EX-3690.

The blue Rockwell at $1,500 is the only one titled 8 in, on its stand with a switch and cord. None gives a phase, so read the motor plate. Delta shipped it at 270 lb alone or 416 lb on its stand in 1961, so plan on freight or a trailer.
