Brand
Joseph Oliver started in Grand Rapids, Michigan, around 1890 with a line of wood trimmers, built by the American Machinery Company, and the business became Oliver Machinery Company in 1903 or 1904. For most of the next eighty years Oliver built heavy machines for pattern shops, furniture plants and school shops, and in 1950 it counted its machinery in more than 2,200 vocational shops. Model numbers like No. 88, 232 and 260 lasted for decades, with letters for the version, and every Oliver from 1907 on shares one serial sequence, so a serial dates any machine. Oliver filed for bankruptcy in 1986. A former employee kept the parts and drawings going as Eagle Machinery, and Straitoplane took over the Oliver parts business in 2022. Today's Oliver brand is an unrelated import line.
