The Oliver 88 isn't a planer. The No. 88 is Oliver's big tilting arbor saw, built from the late 1920s into the 1980s, and it's the industrial table saw a lot of old furniture plants and school shops ran. The 1973 version carries an 18 in blade standing 4-3/4 in through the table, on a 5 HP three-phase motor that is the arbor itself. A knob in the front handwheel works the brake, and an overhead cage guard covers the blade. The extra-large-capacity versions add a sliding table for sheet goods. Crated, it weighed 2,400 lb. Give it three-phase power and the room, and an 88 will rip anything you can lift onto it.

Three-phase motors built onto the arbor are the norm, so plan the power first. Guards, fences and sliding-table parts go missing when shops close, and the weight makes it a rigging job.

Oliver's 1973 sheet lists a 5 HP three-phase motor at 230 or 460 V, built onto the arbor, so read the plate and plan on a rotary converter or a VFD. The one listed as tested, at $2,100 delivered, is the only one with shipping quoted. That's $200 to move a saw Oliver crated at 2,400 lb, so confirm it for your address. The rest ask $2,300-2,965 for pickup. Check for the splitter, cage guard and fence.
