Delta's 14 in band saw started as the No. 890 of 1934, and the design barely changed for half a century. The 28-243 is a 1980s catalog number for that cast-iron saw. It shared one parts list with the 28-203 and 28-283, and the 28-245 replaced it. It takes a 93 in blade, or 105 in with the 6 in riser block that was sold from the start, and tires, guide blocks and blade guards are all listed parts. Delta historian Keith Bohn says the Rockwell International years from 1973 suffered most from cost-cutting, so look closely at the castings and fittings. For resawing and curves in a home shop, a complete 28-243 on good tires is about as safe a buy as band saws get.

Power and phase: We couldn't confirm which motors Delta sold with the 28-243 itself. An owner record for its sibling 28-283 shows 3/4 HP at 1,725 RPM. Read the motor plate in the photos for phase and voltage.
Motor and bearings: Ask for a video of the saw running with a blade on. It should run smoothly, and a thump once per turn usually means a bad tire, a kinked blade or a worn belt.
Table and rust: The table tilts for bevel cuts. Ask for a photo of the table and its trunnions. Rust cleans up, but cracked trunnions are a problem.
Fence, guards and gauges: Many band saws came without a fence or miter gauge. Check the photos for the upper and lower wheel covers and the sliding blade guard, which Delta lists in its parts list.
