Craftsman 113 Contractor Saw
Sears never built a saw. Someone else made every Craftsman machine, and the first three digits of the model number say who. 113 is Emerson Electric. Emerson's 10 in Craftsman table saws go back to the 1940s, and from about the late 1970s to 1998 the belt-drive contractor saws carried 113.298 and 113.299 numbers. They're open-stand saws with the motor hung at the back and a 5/8 in arbor, and many packages had cast-iron table extensions and a 1 HP motor for a household circuit. The digits after the decimal mostly tell you what was in the box, saw only or with legs, wings and a motor, rather than the year, so go by the plate on the left side of the base. With its fence and guard, a 113 is a cheap, sound first saw.

Power, iron, fence and freight
- Power and phase
- Emerson built these for Sears, and the later manuals list a 1 HP 110-120 V motor, so most run on a household outlet. Sears' manuals recommend a 3,450 RPM Craftsman motor and warn against motors with an automatic-reset overload. Confirm it on the motor plate in the photos.
- Motor and bearings
- The motor hangs off the back and drives the arbor with a belt. A video of it starting and running shows most of it. The motor shouldn't bounce, and a slapping belt is a cheap fix.
- Runout
- Spin the arbor by hand with the belt off and feel for roughness, or check it with a dial indicator on the flange. A wobbly blade can be a bent arbor flange or a bad bearing.
- Table and rust
- Many packages came with cast-iron table extensions, and some with steel ones. Ask for a raking-light photo of the top and wings. Light rust cleans up, but a crack doesn't.
- Fence, guards and gauges
- The 1990 packages came with a quick-release rip fence, and every one should have a blade guard with a spreader and anti-kickback pawls, a miter gauge and a belt guard. Check the photos for all of them.
- Trunnions and adjustments
- Ask the seller to raise, lower and tilt the blade on video. Both handwheels should turn smoothly. Then check the blade against a miter slot when it arrives.
- Blades and knives
- It takes standard 10 in blades on a 5/8 in arbor, so blades are easy to buy. Fence and guard parts are the hard ones, through Sears parts or used.
- Dating it
- The number after 113 is a Sears catalog number that mostly tells you the package, saw only or with legs and a motor, not the year. Find the model and serial plate on the left side of the base. Some later Emerson serials start with the year and the day of the year, but that's an owner-observed pattern, not a documented rule.
- Moving it
- We couldn't find a published weight for this one. It's an open-stand saw that comes apart into the saw, the legs, the wings and the motor, so two people can move it in a car or pickup.
- Safety upgrades
- Sears' big 113 recall covers Craftsman radial arm saws, not these table saws, so don't confuse the two. Check that the guard, spreader and anti-kickback pawls are there before you use it.

What to check
Fences and guards go missing, belts and motor mounts wear, and a move can knock the blade out of line. Don't confuse these with the recalled Craftsman radial arm saws.
- 01Model plate: Ask for a photo of the plate on the left side of the base. A 113.298 or 113.299 number means a belt-drive contractor saw.
- 02Fence: Check the photos for the rip fence. It should lock square and slide without binding.
- 03Guard: Check that the guard, spreader and anti-kickback pawls come with it. Budget for them if not.
- 04Extensions: Check how many table extensions it has and what they're made of. Two cast-iron wings is the good package.
- 05Running: Ask for a video of it starting and running. The motor should run smoothly without bouncing.
- 06Height and tilt: Ask the seller to raise, lower and tilt the blade on video. Both should move smoothly.
- 07Alignment: Check the blade against a miter slot when it arrives. It should be parallel.
